Climate Leaders in Canada: Dr. Tzeporah Berman

Dear Dr. Tzeporah Berman,

Climate Scorecard Canada is pleased to award you a 2024 Climate Leader Award. This is part of a global recognition of leaders we want to share, as your efforts benefit Canada and contribute to the global fight against climate change. We are awarding you for your dedicated work in designing campaigns on fossil fuels and oil sands, your books, your courses, and your environmental policy over time as the current International Program Director at Stand. Earth and the Chair of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative, we congratulate you on your advocacy toward concretely gaining support for reduced greenhouse gas emissions and your commentary on COP 29.

Climate Scorecard (a non-profit) was started in 2015 as a worldwide initiative to report on and advocate for efforts to reduce emissions in leading greenhouse gas-emitting countries and the EU. Brief monthly assessments summarize critical topics to help the public and decision-makers more easily understand the extent to which their country is adhering to and/or strengthening its emission reduction pledges made during the global climate agreement proceedings held in Paris in 2015. Canada’s progress toward reaching its targets can be posted at https://www.climatescorecard.org/canada/.

This award acknowledges your commitment, particularly over the last year, to moving forward with the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative. Nearly a million signatures have been collected asking governments to support it. You have shown tangible, needed results for a global transition away from coal, oil, and gas to complement the Paris Agreement. Congratulations!

We recognize your commitment stems from a lifelong career in environmental protection. This includes being the former co-director of Greenpeace International’s Global Climate and Energy Program and co-founder of ForestEthics (now Stand.earth), which protects BC’s growth forests. You are to be commended in the face of opposition, speaking to Net Zero strategies, fossil fuels, and climate policy. Your many awards to date do you justice.

We are confident that your work in the coming year will be equally impactful as you seek to address Canada’s and the planet’s phase-out of fossil fuels. We stand behind your continued efforts to maintain 1.5 °C as you gain results!

Sincerely,

Diane Szoller, Climate Scorecard Canada Country Manager
