Roadmaps for the Future: UK Climate Experts on What Needs to Be Done

Dr. Emily Shuckburgh: Cambridge Zero Director and UK’s Leading Climate Strategist

Dr. Emily Shuckburgh is one of the UK’s leading climate scientists and a prominent voice in bridging scientific research with real-world policy change. As Director of Cambridge Zero, the University of Cambridge’s climate change initiative, she plays a pivotal role in shaping a future roadmap for the UK and beyond toward a sustainable, net-zero economy. A mathematician and climate scientist by training, Dr. Shuckburgh previously worked at the British Antarctic Survey and has advised both the UK Government and the United Nations on climate policy. She was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in recognition of her contributions to science and public engagement.

Dr. Shuckburgh emphasizes the importance of systemic transformation grounded in science, equity, and innovation. Her work focuses not just on technological solutions, but also on fostering collaboration across disciplines, sectors, and nations to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. She has been a vocal advocate for embedding climate literacy in education and engaging youth and underrepresented communities in climate action.

Quote from Dr. Emily Shuckburgh (2022 Cambridge Zero Summit):
“Escaping the global emissions lull demands bold and coordinated action. We must embed climate policy across all aspects of governance—from finance and education to health and transport—so that net-zero becomes the default for every decision. But policy alone isn’t enough. We need a culture shift: one that empowers communities, values nature, and treats climate justice not as an optional add-on, but as the foundation of our transition to a sustainable future. The UK has both a moral responsibility and an extraordinary opportunity to lead this change.”
