Roadmaps for the Future: French Climate Experts on What Needs to Be Done

Dr. Valérie Masson-Delmotte: Leading French Climate Scientist and Advocate for Urgent Global Action

Dr. Valérie Masson-Delmotte is one of France’s most prominent climate scientists. A senior researcher at the Laboratoire des sciences du climat et de l’environnement (LSCE), she co-chaired Working Group I of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) from 2015 to 2023. Her work focuses on paleoclimatology, climate modeling, and communicating climate science to policymakers and the public.

As co-chair of the IPCC, she played a key role in the landmark 2018 Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C, which outlined the consequences of exceeding 1.5°C of warming and the urgent need for emissions reductions to avoid catastrophic impacts. She is recognized for her clarity, integrity, and dedication to translating complex scientific concepts into practical strategies for governments and civil society.

Dr. Masson-Delmotte is a frequent speaker in France and internationally. She regularly engages with young people, civil society organizations, and decision-makers. She is also known for her accessible communication on Twitter/X and interviews with French media, including Le Monde, France Inter, and Mediapart.

Representative Quote

“We already have all the knowledge we need to act, and the window to limit warming to 1.5°C is rapidly closing. What we lack is not data or innovation—it is political will, coherent policies, and a sense of shared responsibility. Reducing emissions at the scale and pace required is not just about energy transition—it’s about justice, equity, and resilience. Every tenth of a degree matters, every year matters, and every choice matters. We must act together, now.”
