Leading Country Climate NGOs: The Sunrise Movement, US

The Sunrise Movement operates mostly remotely and is a youth-led organization focusing on reducing carbon emissions. It was founded in 2017. In 2018, it was popularized by a sit-in with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at Nancy Pelosi’s office to support a Green New Deal. After this event, hundreds of hubs were established across the country. In 2019, the Sunrise Movement popularized the idea of the Green New Deal during the presidential primaries, and thousands of members joined the movement.

The Sunrise Movement organized young people to march in support of the passage of  President Biden’s  Inflation Reduction Act in 2022. It advocated for developing the Climate Corps, established in 2023 across the United States. The Movement has continued to revamp its message and develop a new platform for youth to make their voice more powerful in the upcoming US  elections.

The Sunrise Movement has hundreds of hubs in schools and universities across the country. It has established links with many climate justice professionals and elected officials working to make changes in their communities. Its support mainly comes in the form of donations from individuals and organizations. To date, it has raised over $9,000,000.
