Spotlight Activity: Thailand Environment Institute Foundation (TEI) and Energy Research Institute (ERI)

At present, research on climate change mitigation and adaptation in Thailand is a major agenda amongst the Thai Government and policymakers in the country. To enhance further research on climate change mitigation and adaptation, two major organizations in Thailand like Thailand Environment Institute Foundation (TEI) and Energy Research Institute (ERI) are leading by example.

Thailand Environment Institute Foundation (TEI) is a non-profit, non-governmental, organisation, which focuses on environmental and sustainable development issues. TEI was established in May 1993 for “driving sound environmental policies, assisting community on natural resources management, raising public awareness on environmental and sustainable development, and providing training to strengthen environmental management capacity”. TEI is ranked among the world’s top Think Tanks by the University of Pennsylvania, for 7 consecutive years. TEI has two major funds, which are “Dr. Theera Panthumvanich Fund, and Global Warming and Health Fund”. The Dr. Theera Panthumvanich Fund was “established on July 7, 1997, the day that Dr. Theera Panthumvanich, one of the founders of the Thai Environment Institute and the first president of the institute, passed away”. This fund “was created to inherit Dr. Theera’s intentions to promote and support any environmental research studies or environmental activities that Dr. Theera has actively pushed throughout his working life”. Similarly, the Global Warming and Health Fund “was established by the Thai Environment Foundation in 2011”. This fund “provides support to young people in conducting local activities and research related to health and global warming”. Finally, one of the major research studies conducted by TEI is on eco-friendly products. In this regard, on August 31, 2020, TEI published a research article titled “Eco-friendly Products in Daily Life”. This research article discusses about the benefits of using Eco-friendly products with Green-Labels in home or at work-place as they are environment-friendly, these products benefit the quality of life and human health.

The Energy Research Institute (ERI) was established as an institute under Chulalongkorn University on April 18th, 1991. ERI has been conducting activities including policy research on energy and environment issues, and providing academic services to public in the field of energy efficiency and conservation along with renewable energy. The activities undertaken by ERI are funded by government agencies, international agencies, and private sector. ERI has been actively involved with “issues associated with climate change and CDM Business Opportunities with the objective to assist Thailand to promote clean energy projects”. In 2019, ERI researchers conducted a pioneering research on solar energy consumption in Thailand. Here, a research paper was published on August 2019, titled “The economics of solar PV self-consumption in Thailand”.  This research paper examined the economics of electricity along with the self-consumption of distributed solar photovoltaics (DPV) electricity in Thailand. The research paper further examined the feasibility of three DPV self-consumption schemes (no compensation for excess electricity, net metering, and net billing”) for four customer groups.  Finally, the research paper concluded that “all customer classes are profitable and net metering provides the most customer benefits. However, the scheme net billing for policy adoption is recommended as it is highly economically viable and very flexible in addressing broad stakeholders’concerns”.

Activity Ranking: *** Move in the right direction

Thailand is certainly moving in the right direction with respect to climate change mitigation research. Organisations such as the Thailand Environment Institute Foundation (TEI) and Energy Research Institute are leading by example in facilitating climate change research projects across the country. The Thailand Environment Institute Foundation (TEI) conducts advanced research on some major themes like natural resources, climate change, renewable energy, livable city etc. Similarly, the Energy Research Institute (ERI) conducts pioneering research on energy efficiency and conservation, renewable energy, and climate change. The vast research activities undertaken by the Thailand Environment Institute Foundation (TEI) and Energy Research Institute (ERI) will provide necessary solutions for addressing the environment-related issues in Thailand.
