ICN is an Italian NGO working to build a broad and impactful movement for positive societal change towards a low-carbon economy and energy model. They seek to collaborate with as broad a group of stakeholders as possible, from private companies to individuals, from non-profit organizations and local groups to public authorities, to foster a sustainable future in Italy. The team consists of about 50 volunteers and experts.
Italian Climate Network was founded in July 2011 in Rome. It is a volunteer association that focuses on fighting climate change and channeling the efforts of many young people into climate education and advocacy activities. The founders come from different fields, spanning environmental management and journalism to climate science research.
Since its foundation, the ICN has won several awards, including the Communicating the Kyoto Protocol award in 2012.
It has participated in several COP meetings and global environmental workshops organized by partners and consortiums; the ICN has also organized and coordinated its events and marches. It has expanded its reach by creating orbiting organizations such as the Think Tank on Intergenerational Equity (2014) and coordinating studies such as “The Green Deal” (2020).
It also founded the Mediterranean Youth Climate Network, a platform that mobilizes and involves youth in the Mediterranean region in activism for sustainability (2016).
ICN has partnered with 350.org since its foundation in 2011.
ICN’s Work
The ICN’s projects and activities are grouped into four permanent thematic sections: Climate and Advocacy, Climate and Human Rights, Climate and Youth, and Climate and Health.
The “Climate Advocacy” department is responsible for advocacy activities at both national and international levels, including actions related to UNFCCC negotiations. It fosters networking with other organizations and institutions and collaborates with all other sections to ensure ICN’s external representation on significant national and international climate efforts.
The “Climate and Rights” department is dedicated to advocacy and outreach, emphasizing the links between climate change and human rights protection. It focuses mainly on the impact of climate change on vulnerable groups and underscores the importance of international climate commitments in addressing these effects.
The “Climate and Education” section engages individuals under 30 in the association’s activities. It collaborates with international youth movements on climate issues, proposes actions to enhance young people’s understanding of climate change, and involves them in social innovation initiatives.
The “Climate and Health” section aims at informing the general population and health professionals about the health impacts of climate change. It also promotes health practices and behaviors that help mitigate climate change.
